More about corporate eventsSampdoria were formed in 1946 by merging two Genoese clubs, and for a few years around 1990 they were among the best sides in Europe: the Cup Winners' Cup in 1990, the Italian championship in 1991 and a European Cup final in 1992, with Gianluca Vialli and Roberto Mancini up front. The blue shirt with the sailor's head on the badge is one of the most recognisable in the game.
The Stadio Luigi Ferraris opened in 1911 and was rebuilt for the 1990 World Cup: four steep covered stands, no running track and a square tower at each corner. The design was borrowed from England, and so is the noise.
The city has the largest medieval old town in Europe, a UNESCO-listed set of Renaissance palaces on the Via Garibaldi and the biggest aquarium in Italy. Portofino and the Cinque Terre are under an hour away by train, which is why most visitors stay a second night.
The airport is ten kilometres from the centre and Milan is ninety minutes by train. For other Italian fixtures see our Serie A overview.
