In 1979 and 1980 Nottingham Forest won the European Cup twice in a row. They had been promoted from the second division three years earlier. Brian Clough's side remains the most improbable story in the history of the competition, and at the City Ground the Trent End and the Brian Clough Stand keep it present.

After more than two decades away, Forest returned to the Premier League in 2022 and have since finished among the leading clubs — a run that has made tickets at this 30,000-seat ground genuinely scarce.

Two grounds, one river

The City Ground sits on one bank of the Trent and Notts County's Meadow Lane on the other — the two grounds are barely 300 metres apart, the closest professional stadiums in England.
