Dortmund travel to Baku on Tuesday, October 20, 2026. For Sabah it is among the biggest nights in a short history; for travellers it is a chance to see a city that rarely features on the itinerary.

A young club

Sabah were founded only in 2017 and play at the Bank Respublika Arena in the south of Baku. Azerbaijani football is still new to this level, and a side from here in the league phase would have seemed improbable a few years ago.

Baku on the Caspian

The walled old city of Icherisheher, with the Maiden Tower and the Palace of the Shirvanshahs, is a UNESCO World Heritage site, while the three Flame Towers rise over the skyline and are lit at night. The seafront boulevard runs for kilometres along the water.

A grand prix circuit for one weekend a year

Some of the streets you walk in Baku form the Formula 1 track each spring - the narrow squeeze along the old city walls and the long straight on the promenade are part of the Baku City Circuit, and ordinary roads the rest of the year.
