Just outside town is the Saltstraumen, the strongest tidal current on earth, where every six hours an enormous volume of water forces through a narrow strait and forms whirlpools you can watch from a bridge. Ferries to the Lofoten Islands leave from here.

Getting there

Fly via Oslo, with a connection of about ninety minutes. With more time, the Nordland Line from Trondheim is one of the finest rail journeys in Europe. Allow at least two nights - this is not a day trip.
