Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia – Serie A on Lake Como
Few grounds in Europe lead with their location. The Sinigaglia is one of them: it stands directly on the shore of Lake Como, with a single road between the stand and the water and the Alps rising behind. Walk along the lakefront and you see the stadium and the mountains in the same view.
Small, old, and better for it
The ground opened in 1927 and holds around 13,000, making it one of the smallest in Serie A. The architecture belongs to the Italian rationalist period and forms part of a larger sports complex on the lake.
For a visitor the size means one thing above all: proximity. You sit close to the pitch, the crowd is manageable, and a match against one of the big clubs feels entirely different here than in a 60,000-seat arena.
The man it is named after
The stadium carries the name of Giuseppe Sinigaglia, a rower from Como who competed internationally and died in 1916 in the First World War. A football ground named after a rower makes sense in this particular place: the lake remains one of Italy's most important rowing waters.
Getting there
Como lies about fifty kilometres north of Milan, roughly an hour away by train — both Como San Giovanni and Como Nord Lago stations are within walking distance of the ground. Lugano and the Swiss border are close too.
That makes Como one of the most practical Serie A destinations there is: stay in Milan, travel out to the lake for the match, and be back the same evening.
What else the place offers
Lake Como is among northern Italy's best-known destinations — eighteenth- and nineteenth-century villas, boat services between the towns, mountain railways. The funicular to Brunate climbs 700 metres in seven minutes; on a clear day the view runs the length of the lake to the Alps.
A matchday here is rarely only a matchday. Spend the Sunday afternoon in the stadium and the morning belongs to the water.
