Hungaroring – the Formula 1 circuit near Budapest

Located in Mogyoród, about 20 kilometres north-east of Budapest, the Hungaroring has hosted the Hungarian Grand Prix since 1986. When it opened, it staged the first Formula 1 race held behind the former Iron Curtain, and it remains one of the calendar's traditional events. Its tight, twisty layout has earned it the nickname “Monaco without the barriers”.

The Hungaroring opened in 1986 and was last significantly rebuilt in 2003, when the start-finish straight was extended by around 200 metres and the hairpin was tightened. The current Grand Prix layout measures 4.381 kilometres and features 14 corners, with a capacity of roughly 70,000 spectators.

The circuit sits in a natural valley, so around 80 percent of the track is visible from almost every grandstand – a real bonus for spectators. The constant sequence of corners and short straights makes overtaking difficult in dry conditions, often shifting the decisive action to qualifying and pit-stop strategy. The typically dusty, sandy surface and the corners named after Nigel Mansell (Turn 4) and Jean Alesi (Turn 11) add to its character.
