Estádio da Luz – tickets for the largest stadium in Portugal

With around 64,000 seats, the Estádio da Luz is the biggest ground in the country. Opened in 2003, carried by four great red steel arches, no running track, and an upper tier that appears to float above the pitch. If you are buying Benfica tickets, know this: the curves behind the goals are steep, and that is where the noise lives.

The eagle flight — and why it is not a gimmick

Before every home match Vitória, a female bald eagle, takes off, circles the pitch and finally lands on the club crest. The eagle has been Benfica's symbol since 1904; the flight is not a warm-up act but the moment the stadium rises to its feet. Arrive at kick-off and you have missed it — allow at least half an hour.

The stadium before it: 120,000 people in one bowl

The same site held the old Estádio da Luz of 1954 until 2002 — at times one of the largest stadiums in the world with over 120,000 spectators, an open concrete ring with no roof. Eusébio played here, and the avenue the new ground stands on carries his name.

Three finals in two decades

The new stadium has seen big nights in a short time: the Euro 2004 final, where Greece beat Portugal on home soil, and the Champions League finals of 2014 and 2020. That puts it among the very few grounds in Europe to have staged a continental final and two European Cup finals within the same generation.

Before kick-off — and an honest word

The area around the ground looks like plenty of choice, but most of it sits inside the Centro Colombo, one of the largest shopping centres on the Iberian peninsula, right next door. That is convenient and weatherproof, but it is a shopping centre, not a neighbourhood.

For something more Portuguese: Portugália, a cervejaria chain trading since 1925, is around 400 metres away — draught beer, steaks and the classic bifana. In the old core of Carnide, a good ten minutes' walk north, small places line narrow lanes; there you eat where the neighbourhood eats.

Getting there

The blue metro line stops at Colégio Militar/Luz, beside the Centro Colombo and a few minutes' walk from the ground; Alto dos Moinhos on the same line is the alternative from the other side. From central Lisbon allow around 20 minutes.

Humberto Delgado airport lies only some six kilometres away — one of the shortest journeys any leading European stadium can offer.
