Groningen has the youngest average age of any Dutch city — a quarter of the population are students — and that shapes the bars, the markets and the matchdays. The Euroborg, opened in 2006, holds around 22,500 and stands inside a city block that also contains a cinema, a school and apartments.

The club has a reputation as a stepping stone: Arjen Robben and Luis Suárez both played here before moving on to the biggest clubs in Europe.
