Founded in 1899 and eight times champions of Norway, they play at the Lyse Arena in front of around 16,000. In a country long dominated by Oslo and Trondheim, Viking remain the established force of the west.

More than a match

Stavanger is the base for one of Europe's best-known walks: Preikestolen, a rock plateau standing 600 metres sheer above the Lysefjord, is a comfortable day trip from town. For less effort, fjord cruises leave from the harbour in the centre.

The city

Gamle Stavanger, the old quarter of white wooden houses, is among the best-preserved timber settlements in northern Europe, and the Norwegian Petroleum Museum on the waterfront explains how a fishing port became the country's energy capital.
