AEK were founded in 1924 by Greeks who had to leave Constantinople. The Byzantine double-headed eagle on the badge and the name given to the ground opened in 2022 - Agia Sophia, after the church in the city they left - keep that history present. The stadium stands in Nea Filadelfia, the refugees' district.
