NFL in Munich: tickets for the Allianz Arena, and the weekend around them

There is one moment everybody who was there in 2022 still talks about. The game was over, the stands should have emptied — and instead 69,000 people stood in the Allianz Arena singing „Country Roads". Nobody wanted to go home.

The league has known what it has in Munich ever since. If you are thinking about a game in Germany, it helps to know what you are walking into, because an NFL International Game is not an ordinary stadium visit.

Why Munich works

The Allianz Arena is almost too well built for football of the American kind. Around 69,000 seats, three steep tiers, no running track — and because American football comes with long breaks, the acoustics become a factor in their own right. What disperses in an open bowl comes straight back down here.

Then there is the city. At the 2022 debut the Hofbräuhaus turned into a pirate den because the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were the visiting side — with Tom Brady, who almost single-handedly pushed the number of ticket applications close to two million. There was a helmet parade on Odeonsplatz, and America's best-known football breakfast show broadcast live from Marienplatz.

That mixture is the real reason the league keeps coming back: in Munich a game becomes a weekend.

Where the fans meet before kick-off

Not at the stadium. The Allianz Arena sits in Fröttmaning on the northern edge of the city, and on the esplanade between the underground station and the ground there is not a single bar or restaurant. Matchday starts in town.

What has worked around past NFL weekends:

• Hofbräuhaus — where the American visitors collect. Crowded, loud, which is exactly the point.
• Augustiner Stammhaus on Neuhauser Straße — the quieter, more Bavarian option.
• Marienplatz, where the league has built its fan zone at previous games.

From the centre, the U6 runs to Fröttmaning — about twenty minutes from Marienplatz. Public transport is usually included in the match ticket on gameday.

What makes a game in Germany different from one in the States

Two things stand out immediately.

There is no real home team. One side gives up a home fixture, and inside the stadium both sets of supporters sit mixed together — along with thousands wearing neither shirt, but that of their own franchise. You will see more different NFL jerseys in Munich than Bayern shirts, and more teams represented than at any game in the United States.

And it is not only Germans. A sizeable share of the crowd travels in from Austria and Switzerland — both would happily host a game of their own, and until they do, Munich is the closest thing. Expect to hear accents in the stands you would not have predicted.

Getting to Munich from northern Europe

Munich is one of the easier away trips on the continent. There are direct flights from Copenhagen, Stockholm, Oslo, Amsterdam, Brussels, London and Dublin, several a day, and the airport connects to the city centre by S-Bahn in about forty minutes. If you are coming from the UK or Ireland, a Friday arrival and a Monday departure is the pattern that works: it gives you the fan zone on Saturday and the game on Sunday without a rushed morning.

Munich tickets: what actually sells out

Germany has been on the calendar since 2022. Munich went first, Frankfurt followed in 2023, and the two have alternated since. What every one of those games had in common: tickets were gone within minutes, and the resale market went vertical.

NFL Munich tickets with a hotel: booking both together
