Premier League club Aston Villa mourned its arguably most famous celebrity fan on July 22, 2025: metal legend John Michael “Ozzy” Osbourne († 76). The musician, who helped shape musical styles since 1969 with the band Black Sabbath, among others, grew up near Villa Park and was frequently seen at matches in the stadium. 

The fans of the “Villans” chose Ozzy Osbourne in 2025 during the final league match of the Champions League against Celtic Glasgow as a symbolic figure for their terrace choreography. This shows how popular Osbourne remained among supporters of the 1982 European Cup winner.

Like him: Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner, known as Sting. The legendary frontman of The Police, who also appeared in the 1979 generational film Quadrophenia featuring music by The Who, grew up in Newcastle and can be found in the stands at St. James’ Park. 

“When Newcastle United won the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup (predecessor to the UEFA Cup, ed.) in 1969,” Sting told the portal themag.co.uk in 2017, “I saw many games live in the stadium, and my absolute hero was the captain of that team, Bobby Moncur.” Sting left Tyneside in 1977.

In the same year, Queen released their football anthem “We Are the Champions.” It has become a staple of victory ceremonies worldwide and was released on October 7, 1977, together with “We Will Rock You.”

The guitar solo from Brian May’s “We Are the Champions” is known to almost every football fan. Brian May is a Manchester United fan and has worked as a host on the club’s own channel MU.TV. However, the reclusive musician is rarely seen at Old Trafford’s “Theatre of Dreams” unless for a specific event.

This doesn’t apply to United fan Mick Hucknall of Simply Red. He has one of the most sought-after seats: right next to Sir Alexander Chapman Ferguson, the fiery and successful Scottish manager. Hucknall has played for celebrity teams representing the “Red Devils,” including alongside the unforgettable George Best († 2005), and on June 29, 1996, gave one of his biggest concerts at Old Trafford – introduced by United manager Alex Ferguson – in the stadium of his favorite club. 

The gig, held the night before the EURO final at Wembley when England’s “Three Lions” were only spectators, will mark its 30th anniversary next year.

Celebrity Premier League Teams: Rock Stars as Presidents

It’s been 50 years since HE had his first No. 1 hit in the UK and the US: Reginald Kenneth Dwight, better known as Sir Elton John. With “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart,” the “Rocket Man’s” career really took off.

In 1976, Elton John, raised in Harrow Urban District in London, became involved with Watford FC and led the club from the 4th division to runners-up in England in 1983 – behind Liverpool FC. 

To this day, Sir Elton John, now honorary president and namesake of a stand at Vicarage Road, scouts “players no one knows” for Watford and frequently attends matches.

Who are Liverpool FC’s celebrity fans?

The most famous fans of Liverpool FC are – contrary to popular belief – not the surviving Beatles Sir James Paul McCartney and Sir Richard Starkey aka “Ringo Starr,” but rather Elvis Costello, who also produced punk and ska bands like Madness and The Pogues, and “James Bond” actor Daniel Craig (“Quantum of Solace”).
Craig and Costello are regularly spotted at Anfield. 

Roger Daltrey, co-founder of The Who, hails from London (Hammersmith) and supports Arsenal FC. In 2009, he joined forces with “Gunners” fans to raise funds in the fight against cancer – over £520,000 was collected in the first year alone. 

Steve Harris “addicted” to West Ham United

Like Sir Rod Stewart, often seen in Celtic Glasgow’s “Paradise” and a former youth player for Brentford FC, Steve Harris of Iron Maiden once dreamed of a professional football career in England. The “Maiden” bassist played in the West Ham United academy. 

He and his band show their loyalty to the “Hammers” by offering kits in the club’s “Claret and Blue” colors in their official store. Harris on his relationship to the 2023 Conference League winners: “My first match was when I was nine. I jumped on the bus with my mate and watched us beat Newcastle 4–3. That was it – I was hooked!”

You can definitely spot rock legend Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin at Wolverhampton Wanderers’ home games at Molineux. In 2009, he became vice president of his beloved club.

Did Ozzy Osbourne support Aston Villa?

Ozzy Osbourne promoted Aston Villa on numerous occasions. He and his Black Sabbath bandmate Geezer Butler unveiled the new “Villa” kit for 2024/2025 in a video clip. There was even an official Aston Villa shirt with Ozzy Osbourne branding available in fan shops. 

Ozzy Osbourne’s final concert – ironically – took place with the original Black Sabbath lineup on July 5, 2025, at Villa Park. That was 17 days before his death. 

British (rock) stars and the Premier League – this list would be incomplete without the riotous brothers from Manchester, Liam and Noel Gallagher of Oasis. They are currently on a major reunion tour. 

The trigger: their promise to reunite if Manchester City won the Champions League. Since splitting up in Paris in 2009, the Gallaghers hadn’t spoken. Not even the much-discussed 2019 documentary As It Was truly revealed what happened. Maybe things were different after all…. 

As fate would have it, City beat Inter Milan 1–0 in the final in Istanbul – and in summer 2025, Oasis returned to the stage. Their passion for Manchester City is well known, you'll often find them in the stands at the Etihad Stadium. 

So is the Oasis comeback mostly thanks to Manchester City’s championship win? Definitely maybe.
