Inter: New Stadium and Ground-Sharing with Milan - When will San Siro be demolished?

Football trips AC and Inter Milan in the legendary "Scala" of Italian football, the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium in San Siro, have their own magic. Especially under floodlights, when the access towers are brightly lit. This era is coming to an end. The city of Milan has decided to close the Meazza Stadium. 

Inter Milan won 3-0 against Slavia Prague on the second matchday of the Champions League on 30 September 2025. At midday before the match, Sky Italia and others reported on the upcoming closure of the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium.

In the night of 30 September 2025, after an eleven-hour marathon debate, the Milan city council made its decision.
During this memorable session, a total of 239 amendments were submitted. 

The (actually) disappointing outcome for many fans of AC and Inter Milan and for football nostalgics around the world was finalized at 3:46 a.m.
With 24 votes in favor, 20 against, and two abstentions, the city council decided to sell the stadium to AC and Inter.
The two Milanese clubs are paying 197 million euros for the 28-hectare site, which also includes the adjacent parking lots.

New Milan Stadium: "Historic and decisive step"

"It is a historic and decisive step for the future of the clubs and the city," said a joint press release, which is also available to the editorial team at event-breaks.com.

It further stated: "Both clubs look to the necessary next steps with confidence and responsibility, steps that will lead to a new stadium that will meet the highest international standards." 

San Siro Demolition – or End for Inter and AC in the City of Milan!

AC and Inter Milan had threatened to leave Milan if the proposal was rejected. 

The contract will be signed on 10 November 2025, the 70th anniversary of the completion of the middle tier, which allowed the stadium inaugurated in 1926 to be expanded to 100,000 seats based on plans by Armando Ronca and Ferruccio Calzolari.

On 2 March 1980, San Siro was named after Giuseppe Meazza (†1979), who played for both Milan clubs, was twice World Champion with Italy, and three-time top scorer ("Capocannoniere") of Serie A.

For the 1990 World Cup in Italy, the stadium received its distinctive appearance that still exists today.

Since then, eleven towers have supported the new third tier; four of these towers carry the glass and steel structure of the roof and extend into the stadium interior.

Reports from fans about swaying towers, which house stadium food outlets and sanitary facilities, led to a reduction in the seating capacity of the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium in 2019/2020. 

Not surprisingly, as since the 1990 World Cup, the only significant renovations took place in 2015, ahead of the 2016 Champions League final between Real and Atlético Madrid.

What major matches have been played at the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium?

The penalty drama between the two clubs from the Spanish capital was the fourth and last European Cup or Champions League final held in Milan, after 1965, 1970, and 2001. 

The Giuseppe Meazza Stadium is truly a treasure chest of football memories. 
For Inter fans, there were many great celebrations at their home stadium, both nationally and internationally. The most recent: Italian champions in the derby against Milan (2:1) in April 2024. On 27 May 1965, the "Nerazzurri" became European Cup champions in San Siro with a 1:0 win over Benfica Lisbon. In 1994, they won the UEFA Cup at home against the Austrian underdogs Austria Salzburg (1:0 / first leg in Vienna: 1:0). 

German football fans remember the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium fondly across club loyalties. FC Bayern Munich won the Champions League here in 2001 against Valencia, and Schalke 04 won the UEFA Cup in 1997 against local heroes Inter. Additionally, the "Knappen" from Gelsenkirchen achieved the most spectacular success in their Champions League history with a 5:2 win over Inter Milan in 2011. 

Borussia Dortmund defeated AC Milan several times in San Siro in the Champions League and the UEFA Cup, most recently in 2023.

Back to the present: Since 2020, only 77,668 seats are available for AC and Inter Milan tickets.

Milan Stadium Plans: When will Inter and AC Milan move?

Still, the days of the San Siro stadium are numbered. 

By 2031 at the latest, AC and Inter Milan will move into a new stadium at the same location. It will accommodate 71,500 fans and is estimated to cost 1.2 billion euros. The architectural firms responsible are Foster & Partners and Manica.

Spontaneous football travelers can see Inter on 4 October 2025 at home against Cremonese and England idol Jamie Vardy live; on 29 October, Inter faces a traditional clash against AC Fiorentina. 

Milan meets AC Fiorentina on 19 October 2025 and hosts a floodlit match on 24 October against newly promoted Pisa SC.
