Football trips to Glasgow Rangers FC lead to the southwestern part of Scotland's football stronghold. Tickets for Glasgow Rangers are hard to come by for home games at Ibrox Stadium, especially for the Old Firm derby against Celtic Glasgow, the highlight of every season in Scotland.
On football trips to Glasgow Rangers, you visit the second most successful team in the world. Only FC Linfield from Northern Ireland (56 titles) has won more national championships worldwide than the Glasgow Rangers.
With the most recent title win in 2021 (As of: July 2023), the "Gers," as the club is also known by its fans, thwarted archrival Celtic's hopes of winning 10 championships in a row ("Ten in a Row").
The Rangers themselves won nine consecutive titles ("Nine in a Row") between 1988 and 1997, featuring stars such as Jörg "The Hammer" Albertz, Brian Laudrup, Ally McCoist, and Paul Gascoigne.
Presumably, more Premiership titles would have been added if it hadn't been for the complete downfall with the club's bankruptcy and forced relegation in 2012. The Scottish Football League did not grant any privileges to the country's most successful club and decided on July 13, 2012 – with around 12 million euros in liabilities – to relegate them to the 4th division.
The proud Rangers had to start anew in the fourth-tier Scottish League Two. They broke several records in the lower Scottish leagues.
On December 8, 2012, 49,463 spectators set the still-standing world record for a third-division match against Stirling Albion in the Scottish Football League Second Division. Also in the fourth division, the Scottish Football League Third Division, Glasgow set another world record with 49,118 fans on August 18 against FC East Stirlingshire.
But: Not being in the top division did not mean that the Rangers could no longer win an "Old Firm" against Celtic Glasgow. In 2016, they defeated their archrival in the national stadium Hampden Park in the cup semi-final as a second-division team, winning 5-4 in a penalty shootout.
An Englishman then revitalized the Scots. The legendary Liverpool one-club player Steven Gerrard led the Glasgow Rangers to the Scottish championship in 2021 without a single defeat. Under Gerrard, the "Old Firm" club delivered the fourth-best league record in its long history – with 89 points and only ten goals conceded.
Ten years after the bankruptcy, former Rangers star Giovanni van Bronckhorst led the team to a European final against RB Leipzig. The Rangers narrowly missed out on the trophy in a penalty shootout against Eintracht Frankfurt in Seville. Thus, the victory in the Cup Winners' Cup in 1972 remains the Rangers' only international title.
Football star and Rangers idol Jörg Albertz summed up the fascination of Ibrox in March 2023 during a legends game: "The most important thing for me was walking through the tunnel and running onto the pitch to play in front of these wonderful fans. It was just a dream, and it will continue to be a dream for every player who comes here."
Likely also for native Berliner Leon Balogun, who joined Glasgow in 2023 on a free transfer from Queens Park Rangers.
Possibly, yes! The Rangers, like archrival Celtic FC, have several celebrities on their side. These include actor Kenneth Branagh ("Wallander") and rock legend Angus Young of AC/DC.
Old Firm ("The Old Constant"), the world's most frequently played football derby, has been held over 430 times since 1891. In the Scottish Premiership season 2023/2024, it will take place for the first time on September 3, 2023 – with a home game for the Rangers at Ibrox Stadium. On December 30, 2023, Celtic will host the return match (matchday 33) in "Paradise," before home advantage switches again on April 6, 2024.
