More about corporate eventsThe Peacocks – Travel to Leeds to the infamous Elland Road, home of Leeds United, and experience a Peacocks league match with a football trip to Leeds United.
Three-time English football champions Leeds United had to face the bitter path back down to the second-tier Championship at the end of the 2022/2023 season. However, the Yorkshire club has seen worse. But they have also experienced unbelievable heights.
Leeds United is without a doubt one of the most colourful clubs in England. In 1972, the "Whites" squad even recorded a vinyl record titled Leeds, Leeds, Leeds (Marching on together). Although it is not the official club anthem, it is played in the stadium before every home game.
Good times, bad times at Elland Road. Our editor accompanied this "all-time high" during the 2000/2001 Champions League semi-finals and the playoff matches in the summer of 2000 against 1860 Munich (2-1 / 1-0). At the time, 56,000 spectators at the Munich Olympic Stadium represented the euphoria surrounding both clubs. Alan Smith ended all Champions League dreams of the "Lions" with his goal and kicked off the English side's run to the semi-finals – scoring 5 goals in 14 matches.
Smith, Lee Bowyer, Rio Ferdinand, Danny Mills, and the Australian Harry Kewell became celebrated youngsters in England.
Following the 2002 World Cup, Rio Ferdinand became Leeds United's most expensive transfer departure when Manchester United paid a transfer fee of €46 million for the "Whites'" defensive pillar. This figure was only surpassed in 2022 by Kalvin Phillips (Manchester City) and Raphinha, who joined FC Barcelona.
However, the deep fall of Leeds United began during this peak phase in the early 2000s. Club chairman Peter Ridsdale had firmly budgeted for reaching the Champions League again, treating the revenue as guaranteed – and had taken out massive loans in the meantime.
The sacking of successful manager David O'Leary went hand in hand with the sale of further stars like Jonathan Woodgate. In 2004, relegation from the Premier League followed, along with fan idol Alan Smith's move to Manchester United. Due to financial irregularities and a 10-point deduction, the proud "Peacocks" plummeted to 24th place in the third-tier League One in 2007, where they remained until 2010. "Chronicle of a Death Foretold," the magazine 11 FREUNDE wrote at the time.
"El Loco," the eccentric Argentine coach Marcelo Bielsa, guided Leeds back to the Premier League in the pandemic year of 2020 after a 16-year absence. Other legendary managers in Leeds include "The Don," Don Revie, championship-winning coach of 1969 and 1974, Jock Stein, George Graham, and Uwe Rösler.
And then there was the highly unfortunate Brian Howard Clough, whose 44-day disaster in Leeds later hit the cinemas as The Damned United. In 2006, British author David Peace provided the book template for Clough's disaster at Leeds United. It became one of the most successful English football books, although critics noted it portrays Clough "a bit harsher than the real legend." Some say this, some say that...
Alongside Alan Smith, the most prominent Leeds players include English World Cup winners Jack Charlton and Norman "Bite your legs" Hunter, Billy Bremner, Ian Rush (1996/97), Peter Lorimer, Neil Warnock, Gary McAllister, former Frankfurt player Anthony Yeboah, and of course, the unpredictable Frenchman Eric Cantona.
The fact that Leeds United – whose fans were linked to severe riots during international matches such as the 1975 European Cup final in Paris against FC Bayern Munich (0-2) or the 2000 UEFA Cup semi-final at Galatasaray Istanbul – has the nickname "The Peacocks," is due to the original name of the Elland Road stadium site, formerly known as The Old Peacock Ground.
Built in 1992/93 and during the unforgettable Champions League playoff matches against VfB Stuttgart, the East Stand holds 17,000 spectators, making it the stadium's largest stand. The stadium was also a venue for Euro 1996. The Don Revie Stand, named after the unforgettable "Gaffer" and opened in 1994/95, accommodates 7,000 fans.
Due to the closed corners, the stadium features unbeatable acoustics. "In 30 years, I have never experienced fan support like this," Leeds' former manager Peter Reid once said, "the fans in Leeds are fantastic."
And they prefer to drink their matchday beer in the nearest pub, the Old Peacock, located at 251 Elland Road, right behind the South Stand.
The Leeds faithful maintain their fiercest rivalries with Manchester United, FC Chelsea, and the two Sheffield clubs, United and Wednesday.
Here you can buy Leeds United tickets online – specifically in two categories: "Yeboah’s Crossbar" and the "Centenary Pavilion" on the East Stand. A great pre-match hospitality awaits you here, including a three-course menu and complimentary drinks (beer, wine, soft drinks) with your meal – with tables for up to 10 people, football talk flows easily.
"Yeboah’s Crossbar" tickets also include vouchers for an English pie and a free drink (beer, wine, non-alcoholic beverages) as well as an official matchday programme in the price – with seating located in line with the halfway line.
