Here it is again - the ultimate question that pops up every year, especially around Super Bowl time, when new fans catch the "football fever": When is the best time to travel for an NFL game during the regular season 2025? Our travel tip: October to November, when the NFL International Series sends some of the league's biggest stars across the globe.

Now, imagine the reverse scenario. A Bundesliga team suddenly decides to move one of its 17 home games outside Germany—say, to New York or Los Angeles. Fans would be in an uproar, and club officials would be branded as traitors by the league.

Goodell’s Gift: From NFL Europe to the NFL International Series

Think of Roger Goodell as the Hans-Joachim Watzke of the NFL—definitely not "everybody’s darling." I'll admit, I’ve joined in the boos when he’s taken the stage at public events…

When Goodell took over from Paul Tagliabue in 2006, he made league expansion his top priority. His version of an upgrade from the old NFL Europe? The NFL International Series. And by now, no one wants to miss out on these NFL trips to London, where games #40 to #42 will be played in 2025, or to Mexico, which has already hosted five games.

Not European fans, not traveling Americans, and certainly not the NFL stars themselves. Whether it’s casual fans experiencing their first live football game at Tottenham or Wembley, or die-hards who see the International Series as an unshakable part of football culture, these games have become a major event. With a dozen games played in the UK, one team has embraced its British ties more than any other: the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Eight games on three continents: NFL heads to Berlin and Spain

NFL trips to London have become something of a German fan reunion. That’s why, in 2022, Goodell took the next step: bringing the NFL to Munich. Sure, the NFL Munich Games (2022, 2024) played into some German stereotypes—cue the Lederhosen gag at Tom Brady’s pre-game press conference.

But the excitement far outweighed the clichés. The way German fans welcomed the G.O.A.T. and his Tampa Bay Buccaneers, along with the hugely popular Seattle Seahawks, at Allianz Arena was unforgettable. What most people don’t know? The foundation for a Berlin game was laid that very weekend at the Commissioner’s Dinner.

Seated next to Goodell that night was Björn Werner—a true Berliner and former Indianapolis Colt. Fast forward three years, and now his old team is packing its bags for the first-ever NFL game in Berlin. For the only German first-round draft pick, who quickly learned the NFL’s "Not For Long" reality, things are coming full circle. Nostalgia aside, NFL football in Berlin promises to be a major culture shock.

NFL in Germany: Ticket Frenzy reloaded and two open dates through 2029

You can already hear American fans joking about Berlin’s Olympiastadion: "A two-point conversion from the running track?" In reality, Goodell and his team have tied the NFL’s long-term plans in Germany to Hertha BSC’s stadium renovation. Can we really blame the world’s richest sports league for overlooking a few issues when they’re investing tens of millions in subsidies? Not at all.

The big question: Will Berlin, with its three scheduled games (2025, 2027, 2029), become Germany’s football capital, or will Munich continue to lead the fan race? Frankfurt, after hosting back-to-back electric games in 2023, is also eyeing one of the remaining slots for future NFL games in Germany.

NFL Expansion at full speed - but no threat to German market

Not interested in the Colts playing in Berlin or a potential fan zone on the iconic Straße des 17. Juni? No problem—there are more options than ever. As of 2025, the NFL has paved the way for eight international games per season. Brazil, which Goodell has called a "key market," has now entered the schedule, with the Super Bowl runner-up Philadelphia Eagles set to play in São Paulo.

From there, the ball will fly seamlessly—without any language barriers—straight to Madrid’s Estadio Santiago Bernabéu. And there’s no sign of expansion slowing down. Our prediction? NFL games in Ireland aren’t far off. With the Pittsburgh Steelers acting as unofficial ambassadors, the Emerald Isle has a six-time Super Bowl champion in its corner. And let’s be honest, Irish beer alone would make the trip worth it.

But the real question is why Germany has become such a vital NFL market. Even with Spain and other new European locations in play, Germany’s spot is secure beyond 2025. No country buys more NFL Game Pass subscriptions. We lead the world in Fantasy Football players (#1) and trail only England in jersey sales (#2). As Steelers owner Daniel Rooney put it: Germany is "the cool kid at the table."
