They've done it – Germany made it to the Final Four of the UEFA Nations League in two thrilling matches against Italy (2:1 / 3:3) – and will host the Nations League final for the first time in Munich in June 2025.
There is once again excitement around the German national team, as demonstrated by the incredible second leg against Italy (3:3 after a 3-0 halftime lead) on March 23, 2025, in Dortmund. “It’s fun to watch the national team again,” said World and European champion Lothar Matthäus even before the classic match against the “Squadra Azzurra.”
“The first half was very, very exciting to watch,” said Germany’s captain Joshua Kimmich from FC Bayern afterwards on RTL.
It seems that the German fans in the Dortmund football temple felt the same way. “Oh, how beautiful this is,” they sang during the match.
10.79 million TV viewers followed the second leg between Germany and Italy live on the RTL private channel, resulting in a market share of 34.3 percent, with a viewership comparable to a European Championship or World Cup match involving the German national team.
With this draw, it was confirmed: The Final Four will be held in Germany for the first time in the history of this competition, which the UEFA introduced in 2018.
This means that less than a week after the Champions League final, the four best national teams from the Nations League will also come to Munich.
National coach Julian Nagelsmann, who was the coach of the record champion from Munich until 2023, wants to “make no concessions” to the participating German clubs, FC Bayern and BVB, despite the subsequent FIFA Club World Cup. “The club coaches know that I’m not one to wear blinders,” Nagelsmann said after qualifying for the Final Four with the semifinal of the Nations League in Munich, “the players will be eager to play in this tournament because they’ve earned it.”
Earned, played, but also fought for it.

How does the Nations League work?
In League A, starting with the Nations League 2024/2025, the group winners and runners-up will qualify for the newly introduced quarterfinals, which will be played in home and away matches.
The four winners of these quarterfinal matches (Germany, France, Portugal, Spain) will play in the Final Four tournament.
The host of the tournament will be selected from the four qualified teams, as in previous editions – and according to UEFA confirmation, this tournament will take place in Germany.
The German national team will begin in Nations League Munich on June 4, 2025 (20:45), with the first semifinal.
On June 5, 2025, European champions Spain and vice-world champions France will face each other in the second semifinal in Stuttgart.
The two losers of the semifinal matches will compete in the Third-Place Playoff on June 8 (15:00) at the Stuttgart Arena.
The winners will play the final on June 8, 2025, starting at 20:45.
Nations League Final Four 2025: What benefits does the winner get?
The outcome of the Nations League has an impact on qualification for the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Mexico, and Canada.
The UEFA will have 16 spots in the expanded World Cup with 48 teams, up from 13 previously.
The twelve group winners of the twelve qualification groups will directly qualify for the World Cup, while the twelve runners-up from the twelve qualification groups will play in the playoffs.
The four best group winners from the Nations League will also play in the playoffs – unless they have already qualified for the World Cup.
These 16 teams will then compete in four tournament brackets with semifinals and finals (one match each) to determine the four additional European World Cup participants.
